Helping You Move With Greater Ease

Range-of-motion exercises are gentle, controlled movements designed to help maintain or improve how freely a joint can move.

At Blustone Health, these exercises may be incorporated into physiotherapy to support mobility, reduce stiffness, and help you regain confidence with everyday movement. Because treatment takes place in your own environment, your physiotherapist can also focus on the movements that matter most in your daily life.

What are Range of Motion Exercises?

Range of motion refers to how far a joint can comfortably move in different directions. This movement can become limited by pain, stiffness, injury, surgery, periods of inactivity, or certain health conditions.

Range-of-motion exercises gently move the joints through an appropriate and comfortable range. Depending on your abilities and stage of recovery, your physiotherapist may recommend:

Active exercises, where you move the joint independently

Active-assisted exercises, where some support is provided

Passive exercises, where the joint is gently moved for you

Your physiotherapist will determine which approach is appropriate based on your assessment and goals.

Benefits of Range of Motion Exercises

  • Maintain or improve joint mobility
  • Reduce feelings of stiffness
  • Make everyday activities easier
  • Support flexibility and comfortable movement
  • Restore movement following injury or surgery
  • Prepare the body for strengthening and other rehabilitation exercises

Range-of-motion work is often combined with strengthening, balance, mobility, and functional exercises as part of a more complete rehabilitation plan.

Who may Benefit?

Range-of-motion exercises may be useful for people recovering from injury or surgery, experiencing joint stiffness, returning to activity after a period of inactivity, or having difficulty completing everyday movements comfortably.

They can also be especially helpful when mobility limitations make it difficult to exercise independently.

Your physiotherapist will assess your current movement and make sure the exercises are appropriate and safe for you.

What to Expect

Your physiotherapist will assess how your joints move and identify areas of stiffness, discomfort, or limitation.

From there, they will guide you through movements suited to your current abilities and teach you exercises that can safely be continued between appointments. As your mobility improves, your program may progress to include additional strengthening and functional exercises.

Exercises should remain controlled and comfortable. Your physiotherapist will adjust the movement if you experience pain or difficulty.

Movement that Fits your Life

At Blustone Health, rehabilitation is built around more than what happens during an appointment.

By providing physiotherapy in your home, your physiotherapist can work with the movements, spaces, and everyday activities that are actually part of your life—helping make your treatment practical and easier to carry forward between visits.

Personalized movement. Practical rehabilitation. Professional care brought directly to you.
