What is Registered Massage Therapy?

Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated healthcare service that uses hands-on assessment and treatment of the body’s muscles, joints, and other soft tissues. It may help relieve pain and muscular tension, improve mobility, and support recovery from injury, repetitive strain, physical activity, or the everyday demands placed on your body.

A Registered Massage Therapist—commonly referred to as an RMT—has completed extensive education and clinical training and is regulated to provide safe, professional, and evidence-informed care. When massage is being used as part of your healthcare, it is important to receive treatment from a qualified RMT.

Treatment provided by an RMT may also be eligible for reimbursement through extended health benefits and may be available as part of an approved ICBC or WorkSafeBC claim. Coverage and referral requirements vary, so patients should confirm the details of their individual plan or claim before booking.

At Blustone Health, all massage therapy appointments are provided by Registered Massage Therapists and brought directly to your home, workplace, or care facility. Each appointment is tailored to your concerns, comfort level, and treatment goals—giving you professional care without the added travel, parking, or waiting room.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can support how you feel, move, and recover. Treatment may help reduce muscular tension and discomfort, improve mobility, and manage symptoms related to injury, physical activity, repetitive movement, or the everyday demands placed on your body.  It can also provide an opportunity to slow down, relax, and receive focused care without having to travel to a clinic.

Depending on your individual needs, massage therapy may help with:

  • Muscular tension and stiffness
  • Back, neck, and shoulder discomfort
  • Reduced mobility or range of motion
  • Repetitive strain and overuse
  • Recovery following physical activity
  • Ongoing musculoskeletal discomfort
  • The physical effects of stress
  • General relaxation and well-being

Your treatment will be adapted to your comfort level, current concerns, and personal goals.

Massage Therapy FAQs

  • Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment with one of our Registered Massage Therapists.

Some extended health plans may require a referral before reimbursing your treatment. We recommend checking the details of your individual plan before booking.

  • Is Massage Therapy Tax Deductible in Canada?

Only some provinces in Canada allow you to claim a tax credit for massage therapy, but massage therapy is a qualified medical expense in Canada.

The following provinces currently allow you to use registered massage therapy as a medical expense tax credit: BC, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Ontario and PEI.

  • Is Registered Massage Therapy Covered by Insurance?

No, you do not need a doctor's note to see an RMT.

You may need to acquire a doctor's note for a referral to an RMt to be reimbursed by certain organizations, however.

  • Should Massage Therapy Hurt?

Massage therapy does not need to be painful to be effective. Some areas may feel tender during treatment, particularly when they are already tight or sensitive, but the pressure should always remain within your comfort level.

Your RMT will check in with you and adjust the treatment based on your feedback. You are encouraged to speak up at any point if you would prefer more or less pressure.

  • How Much Does Massage Therapy Cost?

Our Registered massage therapy costs $200CAD for a 60-minute massage, and $285 for a 90-minute massage.

  • What Should I Expect During My Appointment?

Your RMT will begin by discussing your health history, current concerns, and what you would like to achieve from treatment. They may also assess your movement or the area causing discomfort before beginning.

Your treatment will then be tailored to your needs. This may mean focusing on one specific concern or providing a broader treatment to support relaxation, mobility, and general wellness.

  • Where Does the Appointment Take Place?

We bring Registered Massage Therapy directly to your home, condo, care facility, or workplace.

Receiving treatment in your own space removes the need to travel, find parking, sit in a waiting room, or drive home afterward. It is professional care designed to fit more easily into your day.

Professional Care, Brought to You

At Blustone Health, we believe accessing quality care should feel simple and personal.

Our mobile approach is designed for people with busy schedules, limited mobility, transportation challenges, or anyone who would simply prefer to receive treatment in the comfort of their own space.

Your RMT will take the time to understand your concerns and provide treatment that is appropriate for your body, goals, and comfort level. As your needs change, your treatment approach can change with them.

When appropriate, your RMT may also recommend that you speak with another healthcare professional to ensure you receive the care best suited to your needs.
