Targeted Treatment to Help You Move More Comfortably

Dry needling is a focused treatment technique that may be used as part of physiotherapy to address muscular pain, tension, and restricted movement.

At Blustone Health, dry needling can be incorporated into a personalized treatment plan and provided in the comfort of your home. Your physiotherapist will first assess your symptoms and movement to determine whether needling is appropriate for you.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling uses thin, solid needles inserted into targeted muscles or soft tissues for therapeutic purposes. No medication is injected.

The technique may be used to address sensitive or tight areas within a muscle and is sometimes referred to as trigger-point needling or intramuscular stimulation, depending on the approach used.

Dry needling is not intended to replace movement, exercise, or rehabilitation. It is most often used alongside other physiotherapy treatments to support your overall recovery.

Potential Benefits of Dry Needling:

Depending on your condition and response to treatment, dry needling may help:

  • Reduce muscle-related pain and tension
  • Improve mobility and range of motion
  • Ease persistent muscular tightness
  • Support more comfortable movement
  • Complement exercise and rehabilitation
  • Address symptoms related to overuse or physical activity

Results vary, and dry needling will not be appropriate or necessary for every patient.

What Can Dry Needling Help With?

Your physiotherapist may consider dry needling for concerns such as:

  • Neck, shoulder, or back discomfort
  • Persistent muscular tightness
  • Myofascial pain
  • Repetitive strain or overuse
  • Sports and activity-related concerns
  • Restricted or uncomfortable movement

A proper assessment is required before treatment. Your physiotherapist will determine whether dry needling is suitable or whether another treatment approach would better address your needs.

What to Expect

Before treatment, your physiotherapist will explain the technique, review the potential benefits and risks, and ask for your consent.

You may feel pressure, a brief muscle response, or a dull ache during treatment. Temporary soreness, minor bruising, or a small amount of bleeding can occur afterward.

Your physiotherapist will explain what to expect, provide appropriate aftercare guidance, and combine needling with movement or exercise when beneficial.

Qualified, Professional Care

In British Columbia, physiotherapists must meet specific education and experience requirements and receive approval from their regulatory college before providing dry needling. Blustone Health only offers the technique through physiotherapists who are properly qualified and authorized to perform it.
