What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare service focused on improving movement, physical function, strength, mobility, and overall quality of life.

A physiotherapist, often called a PT—assesses how your body moves and identifies factors that may be contributing to pain, weakness, stiffness, balance concerns, or difficulty completing everyday activities.

Treatment may include guided exercises, mobility work, hands-on techniques, movement education, and practical strategies to help you manage your symptoms and make progress between appointments.

At Blustone Health, physiotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all program. Your care is built around your body, lifestyle, abilities, and personal goals.

Benefits of Physiotherapy:

Depending on your individual needs, physiotherapy may help:

  • Reduce pain and physical discomfort
  • Improve strength, mobility, and flexibility
  • Restore movement following an injury
  • Support recovery before or after surgery
  • Improve balance and confidence with movement
  • Manage recurring or long-term musculoskeletal concerns
  • Make everyday activities safer and more comfortable
  • Support a gradual return to work, exercise, or recreation

Physiotherapy is an active and collaborative process. Your physiotherapist will work with you to develop realistic goals and give you the tools to continue making progress outside of your appointments.

What Can Physiotherapy Help With?

Physiotherapy may be appropriate for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Sprains, strains, and overuse injuries
  • Sports and activity-related injuries
  • Reduced strength or mobility
  • Balance concerns and fall risk
  • Recovery following surgery
  • Workplace and motor vehicle injuries
  • Difficulty walking, using stairs, or completing daily tasks
  • Changes in movement associated with aging or inactivity

Some symptoms may require additional medical assessment. Your physiotherapist will recommend further care or refer you to another healthcare professional when appropriate.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your first appointment will begin with a conversation about your health history, current symptoms, daily activities, and what you would like to achieve.

Your physiotherapist may then assess your strength, mobility, balance, movement patterns, or the area causing concern. Based on the assessment, they will explain their findings and create a personalized treatment plan.

Treatment may include:

  • Therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises
  • Strength and mobility training
  • Hands-on treatment
  • Balance and movement retraining
  • Education about pain, movement, and recovery
  • Advice for safely returning to everyday activities
  • A personalized home exercise program

The Advantage of In-Home Physiotherapy

Receiving physiotherapy in your own environment allows treatment to be directly connected to your everyday life.

Your physiotherapist can assess the movements and challenges you experience at home—such as navigating stairs, getting in and out of a chair, moving through your workspace, or completing household activities—and develop practical strategies using the space and equipment available to you.

Mobile physiotherapy may be especially helpful for people with busy schedules, limited mobility, transportation challenges, or anyone who prefers the privacy and convenience of receiving care at home.

FAQs

  • Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?

You can book a private physiotherapy appointment directly with Blustone Health.

However, some extended health insurance plans may require a physician’s referral before reimbursing treatment. We recommend checking the requirements of your individual plan.

  • Is Physiotherapy Covered by Insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for physiotherapy. Coverage limits, referral requirements, and reimbursement amounts vary between plans.

Blustone Health accepts all forms of insurance and offers direct billing whenever it is available through your provider.

  • Can I Receive Physiotherapy Through ICBC?

Physiotherapy may be available as part of an eligible ICBC claim following a motor vehicle accident.

ICBC provides access to pre-approved treatments during the first 12 weeks following a crash. Contact Blustone Health before booking so we can confirm your claim information and whether direct billing is available.

  • Can I Receive Physiotherapy Through WorkSafeBC?

Physiotherapy may be covered for an eligible workplace injury through WorkSafeBC.

Coverage and provider requirements depend on the type and status of your claim. Contact us before booking so we can determine what information is required and whether we can accept your claim.

  • What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and gives your physiotherapist appropriate access to the area being assessed.

Your physiotherapist may ask you to complete movements or exercises during the appointment, so clothing suitable for light physical activity is recommended.
